With 2009 still barely getting into its gears, the political climate is obviously heating up, with aspirants and potential contenders readying their respective machineries and strategies, with the 2010 National Elections now in sight.

The evident pick of the bunch would be the coming battle for the presidency, with the odds currently running in favor of Vice-President Noli de Castro, closely followed by a pack of current senators in former Senate President Manny Villar, Loren Legarda, Francis Escudero, Panfilo Lacson and Mar Roxas.

According to the latest figures released by the Social Weather Stations (SWS) on presidential preferences, based on a survey conducted from November 28 to December 1, 2008, numbers showed De Castro getting the nod of nearly 31 percent of respondents as “the best leader to succeed President Arroyo” in 2010. Legarda and Villar trailed him in the lead pack with the pair gaining 28 percent and 27 percent, respectively.
